Risa Lichtman took a circuitous path to a professional career in cooking, so her passion for food and the preparation of it reaches many different realms.  She had her first “professional” cooking job in 2005 in Tel Aviv, Israel, where she would wake up at 5am and prep sushi ingredients for her roommate, who ran a small lunch business out of their home.  After receiving her Masters in Creative Writing there as well as becoming a certified yoga teacher, she returned to the states and found herself in San Francisco.  Between teaching yoga and writing on the side, she began to explore cooking more deeply than she ever had.  It was during this time that she went through a short-lived but passionate mini-cupcake craze, and briefly considered opening up a cupcake business…phew.

In 2007 she moved to NYC, and while trying to keep herself afloat in all the hustle & bustle, she finally found where her passion met her career.  She is a graduate of the Natural Gourmet Institute of Health & Culinary Arts in NYC, and believes passionately in power of healing in food, as well as the body’s ability to change its food needs over time.  She has been a vegetarian, a vegan, a carnivore, a can’t-get-enough-meat carnivore, and has found that the best thing for one’s body is to follow it’s needs, while eating the highest quality product available.  Risa is extremely interested in food politics and society’s relationship to the food we eat.  She is a strong supporter of local farms, farmer’s markets, CSAs, and independent meat & fish sources.  She wishes she had better mushroom foraging skills but that doesn’t stop her from trying.

Risa currently lives in the Mission with her partner, Mara, and their dog, Isaac.  They can often be found traipsing on Bernal Hill or grilling something yummy in their backyard.
